The Souvenirs You Can’t Buy: The Unexpected Gifts My Travels Gave Me

2 min read

Not every souvenir fits in a suitcase. Some arrive quietly—through conversations with strangers, unexpected adventures, slower mornings, and moments when we see ourselves differently.

We often return from holidays with photographs, postcards, and little objects tucked away in drawers. But the most meaningful souvenirs are the invisible ones: the lessons travel teaches us about who we are becoming

What I realised is that after 50, travel can become less about ticking destinations off a list and more about collecting wisdom and every journey leaves us with something that changes the way we see ageing, ourselves, and the world around us.

5 Lessons About Ageing I Brought Home from My Travels

Travel has a funny way of changing us. We leave home expecting to discover new places, only to return with a slightly different view of ourselves.

Here are five lessons about ageing that stayed with me long after the suitcase was unpacked.

1. I Learned That Slowing Down Is Not Falling Behind

Travel teaches us that the best moments are often the unplanned ones: sitting in a café watching people pass by, taking the scenic route, lingering over a meal. Ageing asks us to do the same: slowing down means finally having time to notice what was always there.

2. I Learned That Curiosity Keeps Us Young (But Not Younger)

The women who seem to glow at any age are often the ones still asking questions. Trying a new food, learning a language, navigating a new city or travelling solo reminds us that growth doesn’t have an expiry date.

3. I Learned That Comfort and Style Can Coexist

After years of dressing for work, expectations, or other people’s opinions, travel offers a chance to rediscover what makes us feel good (and comfortable). No need to rock your look: the perfect outfit is the one that lets us walk confidently through the world.

4. I Learned That Being Lost Can Be a Gift

Missing a train, taking the wrong street, or not knowing exactly what comes next can feel uncomfortable. But midlife teaches us something important: the unexpected can add a little spice to the journey. Maybe uncertainty isn’t always a problem to solve—it can be an invitation to see where the road takes us. Shall we embrace a little more of the unknown?

5. I Learned That Solo Moments Are Not Lonely Moments

Whether travelling alone or simply having time away from everyday responsibilities, solitude can become a gift. Being comfortable in your own company is one of the greatest freedoms we gain with age.

6. I Learned That Beauty Looks Different Now

Travel changes what we notice. A weathered building, an ancient tree, a handmade ceramic bowl—suddenly, everything seems more beautiful because it carries a story. And isn’t it wonderfully humbling to discover places and buildings that are far older than you are—and still standing perfectly well?

Perhaps we can offer ourselves the same kindness. The lines, scars and changes we carry are not imperfections; they are evidence of a life lived.

Maybe the greatest souvenir isn’t the place we visited or the things we collected, but the version of ourselves we discovered on the journey. What if ageing is also about letting go of pieces of who we were and collecting new ones?
