Happy at 50: Michelle Thomas’ Secret to a Joyful Midlife
What is the secret to being truly happy at 50? For Michelle Thomas, the answer lies in embracing who you are, finding joy in everyday moments, and giving yourself permission to create a life that feels completely your own, rather than chasing youth, trying to have everything figured out, or living by someone else’s definition of success.
CrunchyTales spoke to the woman who believes ageing can be a little like a great cake, something that gets richer, more interesting and more delicious with every layer. With each one comes a new experience, a new lesson and a deeper understanding of who you are.
For women wondering what life after 50 can really look like, Michelle offers a refreshing answer: it can be joyful, creative, adventurous and full of possibility.
A passionate advocate for positive ageing, Michelle is proof that midlife is not a time to shrink yourself or step quietly into the background. It is a time for midlife reinvention, rediscovering who you are, chasing new ideas and creating a life filled with purpose, connection and happiness.
Some people see 50 as a milestone. Michelle Thomas sees it as a starting line, a chance to stop asking for permission, embrace the wonderfully weird ideas, and finally have the confidence to back herself fully.
The Power of Life After 50: Redefining Ageing with Confidence
With her bold glasses (though she took them off for the CrunchyTales illustration), big ideas and unconventional outlook on life, Michelle has built a world where happiness, curiosity and connection sit at the centre of everything she does. She is the founder of The Happy Business Club and publisher of The Happy Business Express magazine, where she helps new entrepreneurs turn their goals into fun, clear, and actionable plans.
Her belief is simple but powerful: life after 50 is not the beginning of the end. It is the beginning of finally understanding who you are and having a flippin’ good time with it. Since reaching midlife, Michelle has modelled, organised and hosted events, published a book, built communities, started new businesses and even launched a YouTube podcast — largely as an excuse to eat cake with her mates.
Along the way, she has discovered that the art of the possible becomes even more possible when you stop waiting for permission and start backing yourself properly.

Positive Ageing: Challenging the Myths About Getting Older
“I absolutely LOVE to challenge every assumption which is thrown around about ageing,” she says. “I find it fun to prove the doom mongers wrong.”
And proving them wrong has become something of a life mission. Michelle believes that getting older is less about winding down and far more about winding yourself up properly for the first time. For her, positive ageing means embracing experience, wisdom and the freedom that comes from knowing yourself.
“I love getting older because I know it can be a place of peace and joy,” she says. “If you take your health seriously and make sure it is part of your life then you get to evolve into and appreciate the person you were always meant to be. I think that is so powerful.”
Healthy Ageing and the Art of Living Well
Michelle’s journey towards what she calls her “crunchiness” began much earlier than many might expect. “My crunchiness didn’t start late, it started early,” she explains.
An introduction to macrobiotic cooking by her Polish grandma in her early teens, along with a fascination with herbal teas and remedies from her Polish heritage, set the foundations for her approach to healthy ageing and intentional living. Her vision has always been to live by a lake, and her passion has always been helping others who lift the mood of the planet. But don’t expect her to be found jumping into icy waters at sunrise.
“I do however shudder at the idea of cold water swimming. Not for me thank you very much!”
For Michelle, living a crunchy life means appreciating the free things we have instead of taking them for granted. It is about noticing the everyday moments that bring genuine joy, finding beauty in simplicity, and making conscious choices that align with your values.
Midlife Wisdom: Finding Purpose After 50
For Michelle, the wisdom gained through experience is one of midlife’s greatest gifts.
“The wisdom from learning how to handle life and yourself compounds. The things that never mattered don’t matter any more, and the things which always mattered, matter more.”
This is the heart of her message about purpose after 50 — that the years ahead can be some of the most meaningful because you finally understand what truly matters.
Her advice to her younger self is beautifully simple: “Don’t stop having fun” and “give yourself permission”. Because those important messages can so easily get swept under the carpet when life gets tough.

Living Your Best Life After 50: Michelle’s Happiness Philosophy
A lifelong lover of learning, Michelle has devoured countless books over the years, but one remains especially meaningful: The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor.
“It really made me begin my pursuit of happiness in earnest,” she says. “I learned so much along the way, but mostly I learned how to be happy even when life happens.”
That positive outlook shines through in more than just her words. It’s reflected in the way she presents herself, too. Michelle dresses according to how she feels, gravitating towards sunny colours. Her look is “simple but with a twist.” Judging by the vibrant fuchsia blouse she chose for her photoshoot, we’d say that’s exactly right.
Confidence After 50: Start Where You Are
When it comes to living a happy and fulfilling life, Michelle’s mantra has stayed with her for years: “Start where you are, use what you have and do what you can.” A quote from the big tennis player Arthur Ashe, but a philosophy Michelle clearly lives by.
Because while big dreams and massive goals are wonderful, they only become real when you make a habit of starting, doing and appreciating what you already have. There is also one achievement Michelle sometimes forgets to mention — even though she is incredibly proud of it.
She once performed a stand-up comedy set at the famous Up The Creek comedy club in London She vowed never to do comedy again. But then again, maybe she doesn’t need to. “My life is already full of laughter,” she says.
And that might just be the secret to Michelle Thomas’s version of midlife: embracing living your best life after 50, one ridiculous idea, meaningful conversation and slice of cake at a time.
So, how do you actually find happiness after 50?
At CrunchyTales, we’ve always championed the idea of ageing playfully, embracing every chapter of life with curiosity, humour and a sense of adventure.
Michelle believes happiness starts by stopping the search for a “perfect” life and paying attention to the one you already have. It is about appreciating the small things, staying curious, surrounding yourself with people who lift your mood and having the courage to try new things. Because no matter your age, there’s always another reason to smile, another adventure waiting, and another opportunity to create a life that feels wonderfully, unapologetically your own.
