Author Kat Massey: Finding Freedom, Purpose, and Power in Midlife
For years, women have been told that getting older means becoming quieter, smaller, less visible. But Kat Massey has no interest in disappearing into the background.
Living in the countryside of North Wales, the 50-year-old grandmother of three, mum of two, wife, author, and former stylist has built a life rooted in authenticity, creativity, and connection. With her glamorous grey hair, relaxed sense of style, and honest outlook on midlife, Kat represents a growing number of women learning to grow into themselves instead of hiding away.
From Stylist to Author: Reinventing Life After 40
After spending 25 years working as a stylist, Kat retired at 41, an age when many people are only beginning to feel settled in their careers. But stepping away from fashion didn’t feel like an ending to her. If anything, it became the start of something more meaningful, a chance to reinvent herself.
She moved into radio presenting and became a bestselling author, using her voice to help other women feel seen and heard in a world that often overlooks women as they age. Her book, Living with Dolls, explores a lifetime of judgment, trauma, mental health struggles, abuse, neglect, and depression, while sharing an honest and deeply personal journey from childhood to adulthood. Through vulnerability and resilience, she reflects on how love helped her heal, offering hope and inspiration to others facing their own battles. It is ultimately a story about survival, strength, and finding the courage to build a life worth loving.
Kat was also a co-author of Seen Too: Heart-centred Women Share Their Story of How They Stepped Into Their Passion, Purpose and Power, a powerful collection of stories from 15 women who found the courage to share their journeys of pain, loss, love, resilience, and self-discovery. Through deeply personal reflections, the book encourages others to believe in their own strength, embrace their purpose, and find the confidence to step fully into their power and be heard.
When asked what makes her a true “Crunchy Lady,” Kat Massey didn’t hesitate:
“I think being a ‘Crunchy Lady’ is about growing into yourself instead of shrinking with age,” Kat says. “It’s about authenticity, creativity, resilience and not feeling like life stops after 50. I’ve spent years helping women feel more confident and connected, and now I’m learning to embrace new chapters myself instead of fearing them”.
Why Midlife Can Feel More Liberating Than Your Younger Years
For Kat, getting older has brought something unexpected freedom. Freedom from comparison, people-pleasing. Freedom from constantly trying to prove herself.
“The freedom that comes with caring less about what people think,” she explains. “I feel more grounded now, more honest with myself, and more comfortable taking up space.”
What we like about her is that there’s something deeply relatable about the way she talks about ageing on her Instagram page No polished perfection, no pretending to have it all figured out. Just a woman becoming more comfortable in her own skin with time.
Learning to Stop Seeking Approval
The confidence Kat Massey talks about isn’t loud, performative or built on needing validation from other people. It’s the the kind that comes from finally knowing who you are and no longer feeling the need to apologise for it.
It’s found in speaking more honestly, setting boundaries without guilt, wearing what feels right instead of what’s expected, and allowing yourself to take up space without constantly questioning whether you deserve to.
“There’s something really powerful about reaching a stage in life where you realise you don’t have to prove yourself to everyone anymore,” she tells to CrunchyTales.
Style After 50 Without Following Trends
There’s something refreshing about hearing a woman talk about fashion without tying it to looking younger. For Kat, personal style is no longer about impressing anyone. Having spent decades working in fashion, Kat’s relationship with style has naturally changed over the years. Now, comfort and self-expression matter far more than trends.
“I think confidence comes from wearing what feels like you rather than chasing trends. I love relaxed, effortless style now; pieces that feel feminine, comfortable and expressive without trying too hard.”
The Advice She Would Give Her Younger Self
Like many women, Kat spent years trying to become the version of herself that other people expected. Looking back now, she wishes she’d stopped waiting for permission.
“Stop waiting until you feel ready. Most of life is figured out while you’re doing it.” Then she adds another truth that feels painfully familiar for many women: “I’d also tell her not to spend so much time trying to be who everyone else needed her to be.”
Away from the official bio, Kat says one thing has always mattered most to her: connection. “I’m someone who genuinely believes conversation can change someone’s life.” Whether through her radio work, events, books, online content, or simply sitting down with another woman over a cup of Yorkshire Tea, creating connection has always been central to who she is.“Connection has always been at the heart of everything I do”, she says to CrunchyTales.
Redefining What Life After 50 Can Look Like
In a culture that still obsesses over youth, Kat Massey offers something far more real, proof that midlife can be expansive, creative, grounded and deeply fulfilling. Maybe it’s because she’s realised that the real beauty of getting older is becoming more yourself than ever before.
