Destination Marathons: The Top Race-Cations To Try In Midlife
Imagine running through the historic streets of Rome, past the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or along the stunning coastline of Cape Town. Destination marathons combine the thrill of racing with the adventure of travel, offering runners the opportunity to explore new places while challenging themselves physically and mentally.
This growing trend—often called “marathon tourism”or “race-cations”—is attracting runners of all ages, especially women over 50 who are embracing travel, fitness, and personal achievement in a whole new way.

Why Destination Marathons?
For many midlife runners, a marathon is not just about reaching the finish line—it’s about the entire journey, both literal and metaphorical. Increasingly, running enthusiasts are planning their travels around major races, turning a sporting event into an immersive, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
There are few better ways to see a new city than by running through it. Unlike the usual tourist itinerary, which involves crowded buses and well-trodden landmarks, a marathon offers an intimate, ground-level view of a destination.
There is also an undeniable camaraderie among runners, a shared understanding that transcends borders and languages. Whether it’s chatting to fellow participants at the starting line or swapping training stories over a post-race meal, the friendships formed on these trips often last far beyond the final mile.
The challenge itself is part of the appeal. Training for a marathon requires discipline, and knowing that a dream destination awaits at the end of it adds an extra layer of motivation. Non wonder why many midlife runners pair their marathons with an extended holiday—perhaps unwinding in the vineyards of Bordeaux after the Médoc Marathon or basking on an Australian beach following the Gold Coast Marathon.
You don’t have to win. The joy of discovering a new culture is heightened when it’s experienced at a runner’s pace—slow enough to take in the sights, fast enough to feel the pulse of the place.
For a growing number of runners, the question is no longer just “Where should I travel next?” but “Where should I run next?”
Marathon Tourism: A Growing Demographic
The trend of marathon tourism is indeed soaring, especially among women over 50. These races are no longer just about the sport—they’re transformative experiences that allow participants to embrace new challenges and explore the world.
Women over 50 are redefining midlife by blending their love of fitness with the joy of travel, embarking on “race-cations” that inspire personal growth and create lasting memories.
A recent study by Running USA found a substantial increase in the proportion of runners aged 55 and older participating in running events over the last seven years. From 2015 to 2022, the number of participants aged 55-65 increased from 10.8% to 16%, while those 65+ rose from 2.6% to 9%. This surge is fueled by the desire to maintain an active lifestyle, explore new destinations, and connect with like-minded individuals.
Many women find that running and marathon tourism provide significant physical and mental health benefits as they age. Maria Romano, a 65-year-old runner and coach for Striders, a free walking and fitness program in New York that offers physical activity for older adults, exemplifies this trend. “I used to travel all over the world, but now I’m traveling with a purpose,” says Romano. “I have a race to go to.” She started seriously running at age 52 and has since completed 35 marathons and 110 half marathons.
Some are chasing medals, and fast finish times—others, it’s just getting out there that matters. Romano sometimes runs as a pacer, and helps train other runners to achieve their own race goals as a coach, but when she’s running for herself, “I run for time.”
And how about Nikki Love? The year she celebrated her 50th birthday, she ran 63 marathons in 63 days and found the fun and joy of being a continuous work in progress. “The key for me is understanding the WHY. Why am I doing something that is tough and sometimes hurts? As long as I know my WHY and I am connected passionately to it, I know I can endure“.
For Nikki it’s not just an activity that keeps her heart, lungs and muscles strong, it takes her out into the places where she can explore and challenge herself. “Traveling to different countries for races has enriched my life, combining my passion for running with the joy of discovering new places and meeting like-minded people“.
