7 Makeup Bag Mistakes Every Woman Over 50 Should Avoid

4 min read

Even the most beauty-savvy women can slip into make up bags mistakes that quietly work against their best look. One of the biggest culprits? A make up bag overflowing with products we rarely use, expired favourites we can’t let go of, and tools that have seen better days.

But as we step into our 50s, the goal should become less about trying every new product on the market, and more about achieving effortless elegance with a carefully chosen arsenal of essentials in your make up bag.

This doesn’t mean we have to become strict minimalists or give up the fun of experimenting with makeup. Instead, it’s about embracing the wisdom that comes with age, the realisation that less is often more.

A single lipstick in a perfect shade can brighten our look more than a drawer full of rarely used colours. A well-curated routine saves time, reduces clutter, and gives us more space to focus on what truly matters: ourselves, our well-being, and the people and passions that fill our lives.

To help us edit our stashes and declutter your makeup bag like a pro, we turned to Jayne Morehouse, head of The Beauty Industry Report, and one of the most trusted voices in professional beauty.

Here are the most common make up bags mistakes and how to fix them.

1. Hanging on to expired products in your makeup bag

Many women hesitate to throw away their favourite lipstick or palette, especially if the shade has been discontinued. But using expired products can lead to skin irritation and even infections. Tossing all products when they reach their expiration date is a must.

Liquid foundations can last 6 months to a year – explains Morehouse to CrunchyTaleswhile powder foundations can last 1-2 years, provided they aren’t showing any signs of separation or discolouration, or don’t have a strange or new smell. A good rule of thumb is to go through all your frequently used products every week or two and look for formula separation and changes in colour, consistency or smell.

2. Ignoring changes in texture or smell of makeup products

Even before the printed expiration date, products in your make up bag can go bad. Eye products are particularly risky: mascara, pencil liners or powders should be checked carefully for dryness or contamination. If you notice a change in consistency, colour, or scent, it’s time to toss it.

Products for the eyes that have gone bad can cause the most damage when it comes to infections, so check those the most carefully – Morehouse says- Toss mascara 3 months after you open it. Pencil liners and eyeshadow powders can last 1 to 2 years, as long as they haven’t been exposed to moisture. Those that you have to sharpen can last the longest, as opposed to roll-ups. If you dampen your products before using, apply them to your hand and then dampen. If you dampen the product directly, you will need to dispose of it much sooner“.

3. Skipping regular makeup bag cleaning

Makeup bags and products are common breeding grounds for bacteria and other microorganisms due to their environment and repeated use. Studies have shown that approximately 90% of makeup products, (including lipsticks, lip glosses, eyeliners, mascaras, and beauty blenders), can be contaminated with potentially harmful germs.

Morehouse recommends disinfecting your bag frequently. “Keep it free of powder, colour smears, drips and flakes. Also, always wash your hands before touching the inside of the bag or your products and before or after touching your eyes. Same, if you keep tools in your makeup bag, spray those tweezers, nippers, etc., with a sanitiser made just for makeup tools before and after each use.

4. Overbuying Makeup during sales

Tempted by beauty promotions? You’re not alone. Morehouse admits that during an Ulta sale, she bought six palettes, four of which were nude shades she still hasn’t used.

Overbuying not only clutters your vanity and make up bags but also leads to products expiring before you’ve had a chance to enjoy them. The smarter strategy? Buy only what you need and plan to use right away.

5. Storing products in the wrong place

Keeping your makeup in the bathroom may seem convenient, but moisture and fluctuating temperatures can shorten the shelf life of products in your make up bag. Instead, store extras in a cool, dry location like a dresser or closet.

First, don’t store products you aren’t using in the bathroom, where they are constantly exposed to moisture. Store in a cool, dry place, like your dresser, bedroom closet or other dry area that you are in frequently enough to not forget about the products. I have two identical sets of my essentials – Morehouse continues- one that I use daily in my bathroom and the other that stays in my carry-on. A pared-down group—mascara, gloss, brow, concealer—is also in my daily purse or makeup bag in my car if I’m carrying a tiny purse.”

6. Neglecting brushes and sponges in Your makeup bag

Dirty tools not only affect makeup application but also breed bacteria. As a rule of thumbs we should clean our brushes and sponges weekly and ensures they dry thoroughly before use.

When dampening a sponge for application, place the product on your hand first and then touch the sponge to it, instead of introducing moisture directly into the product’s palette – continues Morehouse-. To help your products last as long as possible, clean your makeup tools, especially brushes and sponges, at least weekly. Then, make sure they dry thoroughly before using. As it’s best to dampen your sponge before using to apply product, again, use your hand as a palette for the product and touch the dampened sponge to that, as opposed to touching it to the product in its palette.”

7. Waiting too long to declutter your Makeup Bag

Perhaps the biggest make up bags mistake is simply not decluttering often enough. What we often forget is that a tidy make up bag can make our daily routine easier and safer. It’s not just about staying organised, it’s a form of self-care and a mindset shift.

When in doubt, throw it out,” concludes Morehouse. She keeps a minimal set of favourites and frequently rotates products using samples for travel-size options, making it easy to replace items without overspending.

By choosing only what truly enhances your beauty and letting go of the rest, you create more than a tidier vanity. You free up time, space, and energy to focus on yourself and the experiences that matter most.
