What’s Your Lucky Charm?

2 min read

Do you believe in the power of lucky charms? I do and since Simone Biles has started sporting a lucky charm with a sparkling goat, symbolizing her status as the “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT), I believe in them even more.

I don’t have a particular one, but I think some jewellery items can have a magic aura. Of course, lucky charms could take many forms. A friend of mine finds solace in a seashell from a memorable beach trip, while another would swear by a particular stone she has found during a walk in the woods.

The key is finding something that holds significant meaning and inspires positivity.

The power of lucky charms lies not in their inherent properties, but in what they represent to the individual. Psychologically, they act as a talisman, providing comfort and a sense of control in uncertain times. This is particularly relevant in midlife, a period often marked by significant transitions. It’s a way of telling ourselves that despite the obstacles, we have the strength and resilience to overcome them.

Studies have shown that superstitious beliefs, including the use of lucky charms, can enhance performance and perseverance. This is because they boost confidence and reduce anxiety. In essence, a lucky charm can be a powerful placebo, triggering a positive mental state that propels us forward.

That’s probably why many celebrities over 50 have one.

Oprah Winfrey, the media mogul and philanthropist, is a firm believer in the power of personal mementos. Over the years, she has collected various items that hold deep personal significance, including a special set of prayer beads and letters from influential figures. Julia Roberts, on the other hand, treasures a simple but meaningful bracelet given to her by a close friend, a reminder of the strong bonds she has built over the years.

Also, Madonna has been often seen wearing a red string bracelet on her left wrist, a common Kabbalah practice believed to ward off negative energy and bring protection, while Cher, the iconic singer and actress, has never denied her well-known affinity for crystals to promote positive energy, emotional balance, and physical healing.

Whether it’s a piece of jewellery, a cherished photo, or a motivational mantra, I do believe the importance lies in the meaning we attach to it and the power of our beliefs. Like Simone Biles, we can use our lucky charms to remind ourselves of our strength, capabilities, and the boundless potential that lies ahead. In doing so, we transform midlife from a period of crisis to one of opportunity and growth.
