5 min read

As a woman over the age of fifty, you’ll probably have some pieces of jewellery that mean the world to you or remind you of specific occasions. But have you ever stopped to consider what your choice of jewellery says about you?

Beyond mere accessories, pieces of jewellery have long served as a powerful tool for expression, reflection, and transformation. As we navigate the complexities of midlife, these exquisite pieces become more than just decorative embellishments; they become talismans of hope, resilience, and reinvention.

Whether you love bold designs, minimalistic styles or vintage pieces, “the jewellery you wear can be a strong signifier of many things beyond our personal tastes“, explains the renowned fashion psychologist, Shakaila Forbes-Bell. “It can speak to an individual’s wealth, social status, and culture and reveal more about our self-identity – therefore, people should definitely consider the meaning behind their jewellery choices, as it’s another way to allow them to embrace their most authentic self.

On the same page, Carolyn Mair PhD, a consultant working with fashion businesses and the author of ‘The Psychology of Fashion‘.  She believes that “Jewellery can hold even more meaning than clothing, as it tends to be longer-lasting so has more time to accumulate stories.”

If you too believe that what you wear and how you accessorize can say a lot about people’s personality and individuality, join us as we uncover how these treasures can serve as catalysts for empowerment, and the rediscovery of one’s true self.

The Psychology Behind Jewellery

Although personality is a very complicated subject, jewellery is a tool you may use to communicate your identity to others. Like the perfect spice, it complements what’s already there.

Bold and Beautiful Jewellery

If you tend to gravitate towards show-stopping pieces, chances are you possess a big and confident personality. Pieces like exuberant diamond rings and striking necklaces that say “Look at me” are your favourites. So, if you like bold and beautiful jewellery, it’s clear that you’re someone who doesn’t shy away from attention.

Sofia Vergara, Halle Berry, and Heidi Klum are all celebs who love to wear bold jewellery. Their style speaks for itself, and so do you. You’re never afraid of trying new things, and you love to wear your heart on your sleeve.

Minimal and Classy Jewellery

Does your heart skip a beat for dainty chains or simplistic stud earrings? Do you appreciate subtlety and believe in the age-old principle of “less is more”? If so, you are undoubtedly a lover of minimalism and classic styles.

You’re not one to follow trends blindly. Instead, you have a well-defined style that exudes grace and refinement. Your personality is likely sophisticated, grounded and focused on the deeper aspects of life rather than the superficial.

Vintage Jewellery

The appeal of timeless pieces holds sway if you constantly reach out for vintage styles. Your personality probably leans towards nostalgia and romance. And you could be an old soul at heart. If you value tradition and see beauty in styles that have stood the test of time, consider investing in a beautiful Art Deco brooch, an Edwardian-era filigree ring, or a Victorian locket to add a touch of historical allure to your collection

An Eclectic Mix of Jewellery

If you like to mix and match pieces from various eras, styles and materials, your personality is likely to be vivacious and adventurous. Much like the joy you derive from exploring the world of jewellery, you probably love to dive into new experiences in your life. One day, it might be a sterling silver piece that captures your fancy, and on another, it may be a bracelet or even a black diamond ring that grabs your attention; to suit your eclectic taste.

Colourful Jewellery

Are you enthralled by colourful gemstones? If so, you’re no doubt someone who embraces life passionately and enjoys expressing themselves through vibrancy. You don’t mind standing out because, just like these colourful jewels, your zest for life is strong and vibrant.

Bright and vibrant hues are perfect for a midlife woman who loves to stand out in a crowd. Think along the lines of colourful gemstone rings, multi-coloured beaded necklaces, or even a pair of dazzling rainbow-hued hoop earrings. These lively pieces will not only add a pop of colour to your wardrobe but also showcase your fun-loving nature.

Nature-inspired Jewellery

If jewellery designs inspired by Mother Nature, such as fern motifs, floral patterns and leaf-shaped pendants, or even made with crystal gems are your favourites, it implies tranquillity in your personality. You are someone in love with the simple pleasures of life. There is clearly an inherent appreciation for slow-paced living within you.

Statement Pieces

Do you own a collection of statement pieces? If these bands of bold and imposing designs are your go-to, and you like wearing large pieces such as big hoop earrings, thick dangling necklaces or extravagant rings, it’s highly likely that you are an active, social and bubbly person. You display a resilient, strong personality and you’re unafraid to be different and have no qualms in making that apparent.

Personalised Jewellery

If you’ve ever been fond of monogrammed necklaces or jewellery with special dates engraved, for example, the sentimental streak in you shines bright. You cherish personal connections and treasure relationships like no other. You mostly tend to gravitate toward artsy pieces of jewellery, revealing a woman who loves handmade items that are unlike anything anyone else is wearing. This includes large pieces, fabric jewellery or anything bespoke.

Trendy Jewellery

Trendsetters see jewellery as a form of art. Every piece they wear tells a story and if your jewellery box is brimming with the latest trends, you are a true fashionista. You intuitively know what’s in vogue and you’re not afraid to experiment. Your taste projects you as dynamic, bold and someone who paves their own path.

High-Value Investment Pieces

Your preference for high-value pieces such as precious stones and metals reveals your practical side. You like nice things and you work hard to afford everything you have. You appreciate not just the beauty of these treasures but also their inherent value. This mirrors your prudent personality, reflective of someone who plans for the future and values stability. Often calm, focused, and confident in nature, you like being perceived as organized and loyal.

But what if I don’t like wearing jewellery?

Not all women are fans of wearing jewellery. Whether it’s due to personal preference or a minimalist fashion sense, many of us choose to forgo jewellery altogether. Some ladies don’t like to be restrained and the idea of wearing a necklace or a ring might make them feel suffocated. They may have been put on too much psychological pressure by their parents during their youth or from a partner before a divorce set them free so that a piece of jewellery seems to them to be as heavy as a shackle.

Other women may simply be non-conformists. They don’t want to follow the trends or be like everyone else. These women may see jewellery as a societal expectation and choose to rebel against it. They may also prefer to express their individuality through other means, such as clothing or hairstyles. This type of woman is often independent, confident, and unafraid to go against the norm.

The Takeaway

Jewellery reflects our personalities more than we realise. So, the next time you pick up a special one, remember that it contains a snapshot of your persona. And as you become more mature, you may find yourself trying out new items of jewellery to reflect the new changes in your personality and taste.

They all fit all the sides of the various parts of the woman that I have become. Some were purchased and some I created. Perhaps that is why I’ve never just settled on being just one me. At 71 it’s still fun to be playful and look nice. Life should be thoroughly enjoyed.

    3. You are so right! At 74 I love many styles of gems but most tend to be romantic in some way.
As we mature, the many facets of ‘us’ begin to show themselves in our styles, colors and preferences. As a Graduate Gemologist, I have access to many options in the world of jewelry. I like to have suites in one color but like to mix complimentary colors as well. Variety is the spice of life!

  2. I had the same experience Margaret! (We may be soul sisters😃)
I felt that I possess traits from all these. I LOVE a good statement piece & get comments like, “only you could pull that off” or, “that’s so YOU!”
But I also enjoy a simple demure necklace with some sparkle to accompany an off the shoulder sweater or blouse. I have moods & a jewelry wardrobe to help express all of them. It’s an adventure & at 59 I don’t foresee a change coming! I wonder if that’s why my Grand children call me Glamma? 😂
    (“Glam-ma”)

  3. I design chunky jewelry on my website jewelrydesignsbyGwencom. All the pieces are one of a kind. I have been told that chunky jewelry is out. I am 73 and I always make a statement when I dress. I do not understand why most women who are retired do not care how they look or dress. Having a very hard time getting women to look at my site. Any suggestions?

  4. You’re absolutely right. My jewelry tell all about me, my personality and how I became a person I’m now and future!

  5. I like Margaret find aspects of my jewelry collection in all of the Personality tastes described. I seem to enjoy the new styles. Such as, the paper clip jewelry as well as the delicate chains from years past. I enjoy having stones, just as I always different rocks. Small and large earrings , just according to the shape make and color can please me. The one thing that I have noticed is that I wear less as I grow older. I still enjoy it but find that I have less desire to wear it.
