The Top 2023 Spring Staples To Build A Kickass Wardrobe In Midlife
Think lighter layers, colourful dresses, and a sense of freedom. When it comes to the spring 2023 trends, there’s a lot to look forward to and women over 50 shouldn’t hold back.
As noted by Vogue Runway’s trend report, the collections reflected many moods: from soft and undone (read draped jersey, distressed fabrics, and other touchable textures) to utilitarian preparedness (think well-pocketed garments) and streamlined minimalism (see smart tailoring and even smarter button-up shirting).
Regarding colours, 2022’s obsession with all things fuchsia makes way for a softer, pastel take on pink, while black and cobalt blue are set to be the surprise stand-out shades of the season. Also, low-rise waists and sheer fabrics will be rife for those looking for something a little sexy, while ‘groundbreaking’ florals for spring get a punchy, three-dimensional upgrade.
Whether you are ready to invest in new pieces for your wardrobe or looking for new ways to re-purpose those most cherished classics there is no such thing as “dressing your age”.
Just because you’re over 50 doesn’t mean to say that you can’t have fun with fashion anymore. It’s about finding your style personality and choosing a select number of pieces that all go well together.
“Don’t let anybody tell you not to take risks. While women at 50 know who they are and are authentic to their style, I think there’s no reason why they can’t be a little daring and try something new“, says stylist and costume designer Negar Aki Kline.
Spring wardrobe inspirations
If you’re feeling the urge for a little inspiration for looking your best, we’ve gotten tips from one of the top Italian trendsetters, Simona Bertolotto to show you the best ways to flaunt your assets at every age in time for spring.
“As a rule of thumb, this Spring I’d stay focused on colour rather than bold patterns,” says the stylist, photographer and digital creator, also known as SissiOttoStyle (over 557K followers on IG). “Instead of the usual cardigan, I would opt for a flowy chemisier dress to be left wide open and to pair with comfortable trousers“, she adds. “If you prefer skirts, I would go for floral motifs mixed with a white or jeans shirt. In case you have a budget for something new, I’d recommend buying a square trapezoid blouse tailored through the shoulders and chest with room throughout the body or a jumpsuit: they are both very versatile, chic and powerful, and ready to take on any day or night“.
Regarding accessories, Simona believes they are the cherry on top of the cake as it’s usually in these small details that true style can be found.
Accessories not only provide interest to your outfit, but they can also add versatility. By changing them, you can wear the same ensemble over and over again looking different and stylish at the same time.
“I always recommend investing in a long necklace and a cocktail ring“, she explains. “Also, when it’s time to choose the right shoes for your outfit, going neutral or daring with gold, silver or bronze nuances will allow you easily to mix and match whatever spring look you choose“.
In particular, if you really want to add a touch of glamour to your wardrobe this spring, Simona recommends the “Friulane” shoes. Chic and comfortable, the Friulian, also called Papusse, Furlane or Venetian flats are increasingly seen in vogue and a real must-have of the season in different colours and styles.
An unmistakable style that certainly will not go unnoticed, the “Friulane” can be used both day and evening, perfect to combine with a long dress or jeans in its colourful variant, but also in more formal situations. In this case, opt for more understated styles in solid colours or for models with embroidery.
Above all, get a good tailor. Clothes look best when they fit well. Also, remember to define your waist, no matter how big or small and buy bras that really fit. That’s a staple every woman should have in their closet no matter what season or trend.
