The Heartbeat of Midlife

2 min read

A tortoise’s heart beats six times a minute, a hummingbird’s six hundred per minute. A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute.

A stark contrast, isn’t it? Yet, each heart, from the smallest creature to the most complex human, keeps its own unique rhythm. A rhythm as individual as a fingerprint, a story as rich as a life lived.

We, women over 50, have lived through decades. Our hearts have witnessed love, loss, joy, and sorrow. They have pumped blood through our veins with the urgency of a young mother and the steadiness of a seasoned woman. They have accelerated with excitement and slowed with contemplation. Our hearts have their own unique tempo, a symphony composed by life itself.

Just like the tortoise, steady and persistent, we have endured. We’ve built homes, raised families, and forged careers. Our hearts have been the constant, the anchor in life’s storms. We’ve learned that slow and steady often wins the race. We’ve discovered the strength that comes from perseverance.

And just like the hummingbird, we have soared. We’ve chased dreams, taken risks, and experienced how wonderful is to be able to fly when our wildest imaginations come true. Our hearts have raced with passion, with the thrill of new adventures. We’ve proven that age is no barrier to enthusiasm and that our spirits can be as young as our dreams and that’s probably why we are called women in our prime.

But most of us fall somewhere between the tortoise and the hummingbird. Our hearts beat with a rhythm that is a blend of experience and aspiration, of calm and excitement, where wisdom meets wonder, where stability coexists with growth.

It’s time to embrace this unique rhythm of our hearts. It’s time to age playfully, celebrate the woman we’ve become, and the woman we are still becoming. Let’s listen to the music our hearts create, the symphony of a life well-lived. Let’s dance to its beat, with grace, with purpose, with joy.

Remember, every heart keeps its own time. Yours is a masterpiece. What is the rhythm of your heart today?
