No Crisis, Just Magic: Kate Higgins on Reinventing Midlife

2 min read

If midlife feels a little like wandering off the map, equal parts thrilling and confusing, then Kate Higgins (our Cover Lady Of The Week) is the guide you didn’t know you needed. As a therapist, coach, and founder of Your Magical Midlife, Kate helps women who’ve never quite fit the “mainstream” mold (and honestly, never wanted to).

Her work isn’t about fixing what’s broken , it’s about remembering who you are. With a blend of somatic practices, soulful rituals, and archetypal wisdom, from Maiden to Mother, Empress to Crone, Kate invites women to embrace every phase with curiosity, courage, and a touch of ceremony.

In this cozy chat, Kate shares how vulnerability became her superpower, why midlife is a time of deep spiritual awakening, and how a sprinkle of ritual can turn the everyday into something truly magical.

So grab a cup of tea (or a glass of something sparkly), settle in, and meet the woman who’s helping redefine what it means to grow wiser, wilder, and more radiant with age.

Kate, what makes you a “Crunchy Lady”?

I’m a “Crunchy Lady” because I’m reliant and refuse to be squished by life’s challenges. In my younger years, I took a lot of risks, and tried a lot of things, but was easily discouraged. As I’ve grown in midlife, I learned how to take risks without being reckless, and how to rebound if the rewards didn’t pan out quite the way I had hoped.
Midlife knocks us sideways in so many ways. Sometimes we are met with situations that we weren’t expecting or don’t  know how to handle. For me, it was having to step into a caretaker role for my father who I held a lot of resentment for. Leaning into my “crunchiness” allowed me to show up for him with compassion while also learning to hold boundaries for my own well being.

What you like about getting older?

The thing I like the MOST about being older is getting to be part of the reimagination of what an aging woman SHOULD be. On the brink of 55, I still dress in bright colors. I’m still silly and playful. I still seek out new experiences and try new things. I have hung onto my sense of adventure.  We are steeped in anti aging messaging from a very young age. In my early 20s, I thought midlife was all about resentments and regrets. Now I know (and am showing by example) that midlife is a reckoning and a reclamation.

Best advice to your younger self?

Try everything and do not be afraid to fail.

What’s your favourite book so far?

There are so many beautiful books out there to get lost in. But the two I always return to are ‘A Tree Grows In Brooklyn‘ by Betty Smith and ‘Big Magic, Creative Living Beyond Fear’ by Elizabeth Gilbert.

What’s something about you that’s not on your official bio?

I’m a big fan of all things over the top and purposely kitschy. I love 1960s TV, Mod culture, and admire people who aren’t afraid to look ridiculous such as David Lee Roth, Charro and The B52s.
