7 min read

In a world that often glorifies youth and beauty, a remarkable shift is taking place. Beauty pageants, once dominated by young contestants, are now opening their doors to women over 50, celebrating grace, wisdom, and a lifetime of experiences.

This empowering trend is not only challenging societal norms but also redefining the concept of beauty itself. From local competitions to international stages, these pageants are showcasing the extraordinary talents, achievements and glamour of mature women proving that beauty knows no bounds

Join us as we delve into the rise of beauty pageants for women over 50, exploring the inspiring stories behind this movement and the impact it is making on the perception of ageing and beauty in our society.

From grace to glory, these remarkable women are shining a light on the beauty that only grows stronger with time.

The Evolution of Beauty Pageants for Women Over 50

Beauty pageants have come a long way since their inception, and the inclusion of women over 50 is a testament to the evolving definition of beauty.

The first Ms Senior America pageant was held in 1972. The idea came from founder Al Mott. At the time, he was running a senior centre called Asbury Park in New Jersey. Then, he decided to hold a pageant for the members of the centre. It was called Ms Senior Citizen. The mission? To present “a positive image of ageing“.

In the past, these competitions primarily focused on youth and physical appearance, often perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards. However, as society becomes more inclusive and recognizes the beauty in diversity, beauty pageants for women over 50 have emerged as a powerful platform.

Fortunately, it’s no longer just about physical appearance; it’s about celebrating the journey these women have taken, and the skills and knowledge they have gained along the way

From elegant evening gowns to talent showcases, these pageants allow women over 50 to shine and inspire other women to start a new chapter of their life with a bit of glamour and sparkle.

The inclusion of midlife ladies in beauty pageants also challenges ageism and societal norms, sending a powerful message that beauty is not limited to youth, but rather something that can be nurtured and celebrated at any stage of life.

The Impact of Beauty Pageants on Self-Esteem and Confidence

Participating in a beauty pageant can have a profound impact on the self-esteem and confidence of women over 50.

Many of these ladies have spent their lives taking care of others, putting their dreams and desires on hold. Participating in one of these contests provides them with an opportunity to reclaim their sense of self and embrace their own mature beauty.

But don’t get fooled; it’s not all about smiles, Botox and stilettos. Preparing for a beauty pageant involves rigorous training, self-reflection, and personal growth. Contestants learn to appreciate their unique qualities and gain newfound confidence in their abilities. They develop poise, public speaking skills, and a sense of empowerment that extends beyond the pageant stage.

Contestants come from all walks of life: whether they are mothers and grandmothers, doctors, business owners, retired soldiers, dancers, singers or poets, they all have interviews and a chance to share their philosophy on life.

These pageants also create a supportive community where women can connect with like-minded individuals who understand their experiences. It’s a chance to build lifelong friendships and be part of a sisterhood that celebrates beauty in all its forms.

Beauty Pageants as a Platform for Empowerment and Representation

Beauty pageants for some women over 50 serve as a powerful platform to fame and success, regardless of one’s background.

These competitions give a voice to women who have often felt overlooked or invisible in mainstream media. By stepping onto the pageant stage, these ladies are challenging stereotypes, showing the world that beauty has no expiration date. And unlike in younger women’s contests, there is no bathing suit competition. Just a celebration of women finding their second wind.

Through their participation, contestants are then able to share their perspectives with a wider audience, proving that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s dreams, inspiring women of all ages to embrace their individuality.

Challenges and Controversies Surrounding Beauty Pageants for Older Women

While beauty pageants for women over 50 have been celebrated for their inclusivity and empowerment, they are not without their challenges and controversies. One of the main criticisms is the perpetuation of beauty standards, albeit with a different age bracket.

Some argue that these pageants still focus too heavily on physical appearance and may reinforce societal pressures to look a certain way, even in older age.

Basically, there is a concern that these pageants may create a sense of competition and comparison among participants, potentially undermining the supportive and empowering environment they aim to foster and projecting an idea of ageing that might not be authentic.

“If a woman — of any age — is confident in the way she looks, a pageant can serve as a validation of her attractiveness rather than an objectification,” says London-based psychologist Amanda Hills to The Daily Mail. But she warns: ‘If the woman has low self-esteem and is rejected it can have a devastating effect and perpetuate a self-image that is based on appearance alone.”

What’s important for organizers and participants is to strike a balance between celebrating beauty and nurturing a positive and inclusive atmosphere, fostering an open dialogue and ongoing reflection to create positive change in the way society perceives beauty.

Inspiring Success Stories from Past Beauty Pageant Winners

The stories of past beauty pageant winners for women over 50 are proof of the transformative power of these competitions.

One such success story is Jeanne Martin, Ms Senior Arizona 2016, who participated in the National Beauty Pageant for Women Over 60. Jeanne had always felt invisible in society after reaching her 50s, but her participation in the pageant changed her life. Thanks to her talent for singing, Jeanne not only won the title but also became an ambassador for older women’s rights. Her journey has inspired countless others to embrace their own beauty and pursue their dreams.

Another inspiring example is Kimberly Ghedi, a piano teacher and grandmother of seven who used to think 60 was a death sentence and she never thought she would have the opportunity to participate in a beauty pageant. Kimberly’s journey began when she entered a local pageant for women over 50 in Dallas. Her natural grace, elegance, and dedication to her community caught the attention of the judges, leading her to win the title of Ms Texas Senior America 2022 beauty pageant.

My self-image has changed“, she said to Reuter, “because I feel like there’s beauty in the wrinkles and I feel like there’s a lot to be said about being a woman that’s mature,” she said. Since then, Kimberly has become a role model for women of all ages, showing them that age is no barrier to pursuing their passions.

I’m feeling better about myself than any other decade in my life,” said the prior winner, Joyce Brown, a retired engineer and a tap dancer. “You can flourish wherever you are, rather at 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 – it’s all about your mental state and what you make of it. I am loving being 60,” Brown said.

For Kasha Grimes, 53, who was a runner-up in a nationwide contest, Mrs Galaxy UK, pageantry was a chance to challenge the rigours of middle age. She was inspired by the younger of her two girls, Misha, 16, who had asked her mother’s permission to enter a teen pageant three years ago.

I didn’t know much about pageants and was reluctant for her to enter at first,” says Kasha, from Cirencester, Gloucestershire. “But after researching the contest thoroughly I realised there was nothing sinister about it.’

These success stories demonstrate that these competitions not only celebrate beauty but also provide a chance for making a difference in the second chapter of one’s life.
