Beauty Guide: All You Need To Know About Face Mists

4 min read

When the temperature rises, nothing can beat a fresh spray of your favourite face mist. Enriched with nutrients, minerals, and vitamins, it plays a pivotal role in making your face look rejuvenated and refreshed as it helps increase the penetration of serums and moisturisers. It’s great even over your makeup when you feel a sweaty mess.

A skincare game-changer

While many of us assume a face mist is just overpriced scented water, it’s actually much more than that: it fights dryness, brightens a dull complexion, revitalizes tired skin, preps your face for makeup and it’s especially useful for those who travel frequently or live in dry climates. And guess what? It works with every skin type.

Depending on brands and formulations, it can have a number of different benefits in addition to hydration, like anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or UV protecting effects.

Look for mists that contain antioxidants which help skin combat the effects of free radicals and daily exposure to pollutants in city life. Products enriched with hyaluronic acid work well on dry skin while the oily ones can get away with using mists based on aloe or tea tree. Facial sprays that contain ingredients like Vitamins C and E, pomegranate extract, alpha and beta hydroxy acids and grapeseed extract are also great options if you have fine lines

What’s the right way to use it?

For menopausal skin, the best would be to keep a facial mist in the fridge overnight and pop it into your handbag during the day to freshen and cool your face throughout the day.

As a rule of thumb, hold the bottle at arm’s length before spraying (so you can get a fine mist) and move it in a zig-zag way over your face to give even coverage. You can use it more than once a day and it can work as a setting spray after applying makeup, too.

Generally, it’s better to use face mists after cleansing and before your moisturiser. Depending on your skin type, they can be applied after or instead of a toner. For those with sensitive skin, the ‘less is more’ rule applies: just use a mist rather than both products.

What kind of face mist is best for you?

With these spray bottles becoming super popular in recent years, there are more skincare products to incorporate into your beauty routine, from toning and brightening formulas to skin barrier-strengtheners.

Thermal water face mists

Thermal water face mists are enriched with minerals and appear to have antioxidant properties that some studies suggest help neutralize free radicals and possibly reduce sunburn risk. They lock in moisture to your skin and help soothe irritation

Often coming in a metal spray canister, thermal water mists are also a great product to take on board during a flight or to the beach to give instant hydration as well as keeping your skin cool.

Although La Roche Posay, Vichy and Avéne are the most popular brands,  nowadays the beauty market offers several enriched formulations.  According to your needs, choose a thermal face mist that also has additional humectant and emollient ingredients

For instance, a product enriched with a rose essence like Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist works well on dry skin. Some of these beauty sprays are great even for reducing the appearance of fine lines (like Biossance Squalane and Hyaluronic Toning Mist). What’s more, in case you have sensitive and irritated skin, Dermalogica Ultracalming Mist may help to calm it down. Opt for Boscia Rosewater Mist with Witch Hazel if your face tends to be oily.
