Ageing Brows? Here’s How to Bring Them Back to Life!

3 min read

We all have that one high school photo where our eyebrows look a bit wild. Whether it’s because we tried to mimic the style of our favourite star, follow trends or struggle to find the right look, the result is that many decades later, our eyebrows start becoming more sparse with an unflattering shape.

We may blame it on the habit of over-plucking, wild shaving, waxing or threading but the reality is that as we age our eyebrows often undergo several changes, adding some beauty challenges for us to face.

Luckily, there are plenty of options that address all areas of concern.

How the shape of your eyebrows change as you age

As we age, thinning, greying, and unruly eyebrows are common beauty problems. You may have noticed they become a bit patchy, their colour starts fading or they even start drooping. This happens because of several reasons, such as reduced skin elasticity, a decline in collagen production, and the gradual pull of gravity. Consequently, our eyebrows may look less elevated and take on a flatter or sagging look.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t revitalize your eyebrows and boost your overall confidence.

If you are one of the unfortunate ladies who might have plucked, shaved, waxed, or threaded your eyebrows too much and are not happy with the result, know sometimes they can grow back. It just might take a little while for your hair follicles to recover and start producing hair (expect it to take up to 12 months).

Meantime, here are some beauty tips for full, well-groomed brows.

Thinning brows

According to dermatologists, over time, eyebrows may lose some of their natural fullness, but the right make-up can come to the rescue. Whilst you’re waiting for your eyebrows to grow back properly, you can always use a pencil, brow gel, or powder to fill in the gaps.

Usually, eyebrow pencils with a fine tip work well for precise application, while eyebrow powders provide a soft, subtle finish. We recommend using a growth serum that can help restimulate growth within weeks and help get you fuller, thicker brows.

You can even consider using an eyebrow stamp and stencil kit to help give you the perfect brow shape in seconds. Opt for a shade that closely matches your natural brow colour. This simple tool can instantly give your face a more defined look without any hassle.

Finish off with a high-quality brow gel or wax to keep those pesky strands in check. By applying a little product in an upward direction, you can elevate your brows and create a more open and bright-eyed appearance.

Fading brows

As eyebrows tend to lose their colour over time, opting for semi-permanent makeup like microblading can effectively address this concern while providing results that can last up to a year.

Since this procedure involves a form of temporary tattooing for the brows, it requires careful execution and may necessitate several sessions, which can increase the overall cost.

For a milder option, you might want to try Henna brows. Similar to henna tattoos, this plant-based dye enhances the brows by filling in sparse areas and masking thinning spots. This temporary solution generally lasts up to 10 days, making it perfect for special occasions and allowing you to preview how your brows might look with semi-permanent makeup.

If you’re interested in enhancing or altering your brow colour, brow tinting is another option. This process provides a bold definition to your brows and typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows.

As they say, eyes are the windows to the soul, and the eyebrows are the window frame. Recognizing their importance, particularly as we grow older, is essential for preserving a radiant appearance.

Board-certified dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, emphasizes, “Eyebrows play a crucial role in defining your facial structure.” Celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman concurs, stating, “Softer, fuller brows often appear more youthful and create a more laid-back look. On the other hand, thinner brows can disrupt facial harmony and may give a pinched appearance.

Always choose a certified technician who can analyze your facial structure, recommend a shape that complements your features, and provide expert guidance on grooming and styling. The face you had a decade ago is not the one you have now so it may be time for an arch update.
